The marriage contract was written  10 Nov 1841, between Stuart Cairns Maitland and Margaret Shippen Lynch.  She covenanted, 6th April 1842,  that 'such settlement should be in lieu, bar and satisfaction of all dower, thirds, or other part or share and of all other Estate right and interest which at Common law or by custom or statute or otherwise howsoever she the said Margaret Shippen in case she should survive the said Stuart Cairns Maitland, could or might have or claim in to or out of all or any of the Manors, lands, tenements, or other heritable or moveable property in Scotland or elsewhere in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland' etc. etc.
